The Sandbox Launches ‘Voxel Games’ Program for Indie Devs

-

Popular blockchain-based platform The Sandbox has launched a new program called Voxel Games, designed to assist independent developers in creating voxel-style games.

The initiative allows developers to use popular engines of their choice to build games for The Sandbox metaverse whilst also distributing them on other platforms such as PC, mobile, and the web.

This marks a significant expansion in The Sandbox’s efforts to involve more advanced developers and broaden the reach of games created within its ecosystem.

What is the Voxel Games Program?

The Voxel Games program is a new initiative aimed at helping indie developers create voxel-based games that align with The Sandbox’s signature aesthetic.

Unlike The Sandbox’s existing no-code tools like VoxEdit and Game Maker, which cater to novice creators, Voxel Games offers developers the ability to work with more advanced game engines like Unity, Unreal, and HTML5. This allows for the creation of more complex and detailed games, which can be distributed not only within The Sandbox metaverse but also across other gaming platforms, including web and mobile.

The program involves partnerships with experienced game development studios such as FRAG Games and The Devhouse Agency, providing developers with additional support and collaboration opportunities.

What features and benefits does the program offer?

By joining the program, developers will get access to The Sandbox’s large user base, which includes over 6 million accounts, as well as numerous partnerships with major brands and entertainment franchises giving developers a built-in audience and potential exposure to high-profile collaborations.

The program also enables developers to create cross-platform games. Whilst these games can be integrated into The Sandbox, they are not limited to its ecosystem, allowing developers to distribute their projects across multiple platforms, such as PC, mobile, and the web.

In addition, the program supports traditional game monetization mechanics including free-to-play, microtransactions, in-app purchases, and ads along with optional inclusion of blockchain-based elements like NFTs and The Sandbox’s native $SAND token, making the program accessible to developers who are not familiar with blockchain technology.

How to participate in the Voxel Games program?

At its current stage, participation in the Voxel Games program is by invitation only, with developers and studios being selected through a referral process.

The Sandbox is still refining the program’s guidelines, and more details about the application process will be released in the coming weeks. Developers interested in joining are encouraged to follow official channels for The Sandbox on platforms like X, Instagram, Medium, and Discord.

The first games created through the program are expected to be launched in 2025.
